Breaking ground and building community
On Oct. 24, 2025, representatives from the YMCA of Greater Omaha, Omaha Public Schools, project partners and public officials came together to break ground on Project Game ON.
North High students, Butler-Gast YMCA members and Mayor John Ewing were shovel holders for the ceremony, digging in and marking the next phase of this momentous project.
“Today isn’t just about breaking ground; it’s about building on a legacy that has shaped lives for decades and catapulting this community into a bold new future,” said DeValon Whitcomb, a North High graduate and YMCA leader.
“I’m excited to see North High Vikings have their own football stadium in North Omaha. This is a momentous moment for the community. This is an excellent example of partnership with The Lozier Foundation, Omaha Public Schools, the YMCA of Greater Omaha and MCL Construction,” shared Mayor John Ewing.
Project partners began the construction process for the new Butler-Gast YMCA and North High stadium in early September, clearing the site and preparing the grounds. Project Game ON aims to create accessible, affordable health, wellness and youth development opportunities in North Omaha.
Following the Butler-Gast YMCA’s closure on July 18, YMCA members have continued to enjoy full access to all 13 YMCA locations across the Omaha metro, including nearby branches such as the Maple Street YMCA and the Downtown YMCA.
As construction began, YouTurn, formerly located at 34th and Ames avenues, moved to its new location at 117 N. 32nd Ave. YouTurn's team will continue their meaningful and vital work in the North Omaha community.
Ongoing project updates, renderings and opportunities for future community engagement will be shared at ProjectGameON.org.
